You can’t know the exact amount of rent you owe until you’re in your rent-stabilized apartment, but you can find out how much it is by looking at your rent tab.
Rent-stability experts recommend that you do the following to determine the right amount: Read through your rent contract, and try to remember the amount of money you owe in the past.
Check to see if there are any special clauses in your contract that prevent you from owing more.
If there is, ask if you can renegotiate it.
If you can’t, you should pay as little as you can afford.
If it’s more than you can comfortably pay, you need to find a better apartment.
